Designation used in the nineteenth century for a contrabass instrument to the trombone section: at first a Russian bassoon or bass horn, then sometimes a valve ophicleide, and later a contrabass valve trombone used by Verdi. In current usage the word most usually denotes a contrabass valve trombone
