Formes fixes

Fixed patterns or styles with which certain forms of music must comply. This term specifically applies to the music of France in the Renaissance, such as the ballade and the rondeau. ("fixed forms") standardized musical and poetic forms (the virelai, ballade and rondeau) used in French secular music sporadically during the thirteenth century and consistently during the fourteenth and early-to-mid fifteenth centuries.
