Gigue

A lively old dance, possibly the descendant of the English jig; the gigue was known in England as early as 1600, and on the continent by the middle of the 17th century. By the 18th century, the gigue had been standardized as the last of the four regular dances of the suite, and was in 6/8 meter. A Medieval instrument resembling the violin, related to the German geige.
