Unmeasured music

an approach to rhythm which left the determination of rhythm to the performer. Many medieval genres were unmeasured: plainchant, troubadour-trouvere repertory, organum purum and early organum styles, for instance. Since several of these genres predate systems of rhythmic notation, the term "free rhythm" is preferred by some authors.
